Extinction threshold in metapopulation models

چکیده
The term extinction threshold refers to a critical value of some attribute, such as the amount of habitat in the landscape, below which a population, a metapopulation, or a species does not persist. In this paper we discuss the existence and behavior of extinction thresholds in the context of metapopulation models. We review and extend recent developments in the theory and application of patch occupancy models, which have been developed for assessing the dynamics of species inhabiting highly fragmented landscapes. We discuss the relationship between deterministic and stochastic models, the possibility of alternative equilibria, transient dynamics following perturbations from the equilibrium state, and the effect of spatially correlated and temporally varying environmental conditions. We illustrate the theory with an empirical example based on the Glanville fritillary butterfl y (Melitaea cinxia) metapopulation in the Åland Islands in southwest Finland.

Metapopulation models for extinction threshold in spatially correlated landscapes.
Simple analytical models assuming homogeneous space have been used to examine the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on metapopulation size. The models predict an extinction threshold, a critical amount of suitable habitat below which the metapopulation goes deterministically extinct. The consequences of non-random loss of habitat for species with localized dispersal have been studied ma...
متن کاملA spatially structured metapopulation model with patch dynamics.
Metapopulation models that incorporate both spatial and temporal structure are studied in this paper. The existence and stability of equilibria are provided, and an extinction threshold condition is derived which depends on patch dynamics (patch destruction and creation) and metapopulation dynamics (patch colonization and extinction). These results refine threshold conditions given by previous ...
متن کاملExtinction dynamics in experimental metapopulations.
Metapopulation theory provides a framework for understanding population persistence in fragmented landscapes and as such has been widely used in conservation biology to inform management of fragmented populations. However, classical metapopulation theory [Levins, R. (1970) Lect. Notes Math. 2, 75-107] ignores metapopulation structure and local population dynamics, both of which may affect extin...
متن کاملAsymptotic behavior of a metapopulation model
We study the behavior of an infinite system of ordinary differential equations modeling the dynamics of a metapopulation, a set of (discrete) populations subject to local catastrophes and connected via migration under a mean field rule; the local population dynamics follow a generalized logistic law. We find a threshold below which all the solutions tend to total extinction of the metapopulatio...
متن کاملTesting metapopulation models with stream-fish assemblages
We assessed the utility of simple metapopulation models in an analysis of a decade (1976–86) of stream-fish censuses at 10 sites on the Cimarron River, Oklahoma. This assemblage is a good candidate for metapopulation analysis because there was substantial annual turnover of population, with frequent local extinctions and recolonizations. However, annual probabilities of colonization and extinct...
